Origin of the Game |
| Around 1884 a game of cards known as
Russian Whist arrived in England and became popular
in some quarters. Two families of Leicestershire developed
the habit of visiting each other on alternate nights
to play the game. There was a rickety old bridge on
the way between two houses and neither family felt safe
while crossing it.While parting, the visiting family
would say: "Thank goodness, it's your bridge tomorrow
night."They began to jocularly call the game, Bridge
Whist but the name caught and eventually became shortened
to Bridge. |

| Why do bats hang
upside down while resting? |
 |
| The reason is that their
leg bones are too thin to support the weight of their
bodies. Bats that are grounded drag their bodies along
the floor to avoid putting weight on their legs. When
they hang downwards from their perch, the weight is
taken off their legs and the load is borne effortlessly
by stretched muscles and tendons.

How do bats see? |
| Though people have always thought that
bats bring bad luck, they are actually mild and affectionate
creatures. Bats make high pitch sounds which our ears
cannot hear. The bats bounce these sounds, off barriers,
off houses, roofs and bell towers. The echoes of these
sounds travel back to the bats and tell them what is
around them in the dark. This is how they catch their
prey! |

Coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear and thermal reactors are
conventional energy sources that have proven to be not only
environmentally devastating but also dependent on scarce non-renewable
limited resources. The thrust now is to explore small- scale
hydro-electric power, wind-farms, tidal and wave power, solar
power, geo-thermal and bio-mass (plant and animal waste) fuels
that are renewable providers of energy, and can, if planned
correctly, be less damaging to the earth. |

 |
| |
| In a single year, the sun
delivers enough energy to meet mankind's
current consumption some 10,000 times over. |

Coal, oil and natural gas
account for 88% of the global energy used. |
|
| |
 |
| |
| Studies in 1990 estimated
that of the energy used, 77% was from fossil fuels,
18% from 'renewables' and 5% from nuclear energy. |

Overuse of energy resources
indirectly leads to pollution, increase of 'greenhouse'
gases, the depletion of the ozone layer and exhaustion
of natural resources. According to some conservative
estimates, oil reserves will last for less than 40 years. |

 |
| |
| In India, local production
constitutes 33% of oil needs, the rest is imported. |
