Transport sector in India consumes around 50% of petroleum products and there exists a 15-20% saving potential by inculcating good driving habits. PCRA in the recent past had sponsored a project with IIP Dehradun to optimize the speed at which the new generation cars available in Indian market give best KMPL. As per the report submitted by IIP it is found that the vehicles both in small and big category give best KMPL at a speed of 45 KMPH. In addition, as per one of the studies conducted by CRRI fuel worth Rs.994 crores is wasted on Delhi roads per annum due to congestion at red lights. Further, if the stopping time is more than 15 seconds for petrol driven vehicles and more than 30 seconds for diesel driven vehicles, the engine should be switched off at the traffic intersections to save fuel. There are 7 very simple tips compiled in the form of a booklet by PCRA for free distribution amongst the car users. By following these simple tips, 20% fuel can be easily saved.
